 マーティン・デニーは「エキゾチカの父」として知られる、アメリカのピアニスト、作曲家。デニーは1950年代半ば、ハワイで知名度と人気を獲得し、彼のバンドと共にオアフ島の有名ホテル内にあるシェル・バーで演奏した。この演奏がリバティ・レコードとのレコード契約につながり、40枚近いレコードをリリース、400万枚以上を売り上げた。
彼のトレードマークとなる「エキゾチカ」サウンドはシェル・バーでの演奏時に閃く。バンド・スタンドの外にプール、岩やヤシの木が生い茂るエキゾチックな空間で演奏中、バックグラウンドでウシガエルの鳴き声を聞いた。その鳴き声は彼らの音楽に溶け込み、演奏が止まるとカエルの鳴き声も止んだ。当初はギャグとして演奏中に熱帯の鳥の鳴き声を奏でていた。これらの鳥やカエルの鳴き声はスタジオで複製され、100万枚以上を売り上げたマーティン・デニーのレコード『クワイエット・ヴィレッジ』に不可欠な要素となった。

Martin Denny was an American pianist and composer who was known as the “Father Of Exotica”. Denny first gained recognition and popularity in the mid 1950s in Hawaii, where he and his band performed at the Shell Bar in the Hawaiian Village in Oahu. This would lead to a record contract with Liberty Records; under which he released close to 40 records, selling over 4 million copies. It was while performing at the Shell Bar that Denny discovered what would become his trademark “exotica” sound. The bar had a very exotic setting with a pool of water outside of the bandstand, and with rocks and palm trees growing around. While playing, in the background, Denny and his band heard bullfrogs croaking. The croaking blended with their music and when the band stopped, so did the frogs. It was from this time that the band began doing tropical bird calls (first as a gag) during their performances. Upon request, these bird and frog sounds were duplicated in the studio, and became an integral part of the Martin Denny record Quiet Village - which sold more than one million copies. In his never ending quest to create new and exotic sounds, Denny made use of many different instruments. Instruments such as Burmese temple bells, cymbals and gongs, ranging in size from those of only few ounces to some almost too large for one person to lift. The music that Martin Denny originated became so famous that it has been imitated by many other groups. Yellow Magic Orchestra was influenced by Martin Denny, and paid tribute to him on their self-entitled debut album from 1978 with a remake of his song “Firecracker”. This design was created by Edwin Fotheringham who has contributed illustration work for over 25 years to music packaging, magazines, children’s books, advertising campaigns, and tech.
