This t-shirt design is a tribute to blues guitarist and singer Furry Lewis. The design comes from a monochrome picture of Lewis holding a guitar case with his name and city of residence written on it.
Walter “Furry” Lewis was born in the 1890s in Greenwood, Mississippi. He acquired the nickname “Furry” from childhood friends. His family moved to Memphis when he was seven year old; and this is where he would call home for the duration of his life. By the early 1900s, Lewis was performing in the local taverns and on the streets of Memphis.
In 1927, Lewis made his first recording in Chicago for the Vocalion record label. He cut five songs, and was a natural in the recording studio. Later in 1927, Lewis was back in Chicago to cut an additional six songs. These songs featured only his voice and his guitar. Lewis seldom played with anyone else because his loose bar structures made it difficult for others to follow him. At the time, Lewis’ records didn’t sell well and his only followers were local followers from around the Memphis area.
Lewis gave up music in the 1930s as the Depression reduced the market for country-blues. Lewis found work in Memphis as a municipal laborer, and would continue in this line of work until the 1950s. During this period, he played music only for his friends and family. In the late 1950s, folk/blues scholar Sam Charters approached Lewis and persuaded him to resume his musical career – as Lewis was one of the only blues musicians from Memphis who was active in the 1930s that was still living. In 1961, Lewis returned to the studio under Charters’ direction and cut two albums for the Prestige/Bluesville labels. Even after a long musical hiatus, these albums presented Lewis in excellent form with his singing and his guitar technique. These records introduced Lewis to new legion of audiences that were hardcore folk and blues enthusiasts. With the reemergence of blues music in the US in the 1960s, Lewis gained the opportunity to play in music festivals, and even appeared on television talk shows.
In 1976, Joni Mitchell released the album ‘Hejira’ which featured a song about Lewis titled “Furry Sings the Blues”. Lewis would continue to play and record his unique blues until his passing in 1981.
