Although a group of only three, they sounded like 6 or 7 people. Hound Dog Taylor played lead guitar and handled most of the vocal duties. Brewer Phillips, as second guitar player, accompanied Hound Dog by playing the bass lines on his vintage Fender Telecaster. Being an accomplished blues guitarist himself, Brewer would occasionally show his prowess by ripping into a lengthy guitar solo of his own. As one of Chicago’s best blues shuffle drummers, Ted Harvey was never fancy but drove the band’s songs by putting each beat perfectly in the pocket. No bass, just two guitars and drums! Hound Dog was a throwback in that he didn’t use a bass player because they couldn’t keep up with him. The HouseRocker’s music was unpretentious, emotional, and full of energy. They believed in having fun when they performed, and wanted their audience to have fun also. One of the band’s house rules was that they never rehearsed. A lot of their songs started out as works in progress and developed into songs upon repeated playing during their shows. The HouseRockers also believed that you really should not perform unless you had a reasonable amount of alcohol. After Hound Dog Taylor’s passing in 1975, Brewer Phillips and Ted Harvey joined up with J.B. Hutto, and continued to use the HouseRockers moniker. Both musicians remained active into their later years - with Brewer Phillips passing in 1999, and Ted Harvey in 2016. This t-shirt design was created from a black and white photograph of Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers. In the years since, Ed has contributed illustrated graphics for a myriad of artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Bo Diddley, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and local pals Mudhoney.
