He became a full-time musician in 1957, performing at the local clubs in black neighborhoods on Chicago’s South Side. His searing slide guitar playing on his 50 dollar Japanese Kingston guitar, plugged into his Sears and Roebuck amplifier and cracked speakers produced a raw, distorted sound. Hound Dog believed ardently that people who experienced his music should be yelling, dancing, screaming, and having fun. His whole attitude was ‘who gives a damn’ and he was not the least bit interested in being smooth or sophisticated. On the bandstand, Hound Dog was constantly laughing and joking with his bandmates and with the audience. His music existed to make people happy. Hound Dog Taylor’s self-written epitaph states “When I die, they’ll say he couldn’t play shit, but he sure made it sound good!” This t-shirt design was created from a black and white photograph of Hound Dog Taylor. After creating much of the early cover art for the band Mudhoney, his illustration career began in earnest. In the years since, Ed has contributed illustrated graphics for a myriad of artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Bo Diddley, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and local pals Mudhoney.
